Deep in the forests of southern Albania lies a natural wonder that has captivated visitors for centuries—the Blue Eye (Syri i Kaltër). This mysterious spring, with its otherworldly blue color, holds both natural beauty and local legend.
A Natural Wonder
The Blue Eye is a freshwater spring that emerges from a depth of at least 50 meters—divers have never reached the bottom. The water is so clear and blue that it seems almost artificial, like a giant eye gazing up from the earth.
The Legend
Local folklore tells of a beautiful fairy who lived in the forest. One day, a dragon fell in love with her, but she rejected him. In his anger, he cursed her, turning her into this eternal spring, forever gazing at the sky with her blue eye.
Another version speaks of a dragon who lived in a cave beneath the spring. The villagers would sacrifice animals to appease him. One day, a brave young man descended into the depths and killed the dragon, his victory forever marked by the brilliant blue water.
Visiting the Blue Eye
Located about 25 km from Saranda, the Blue Eye is surrounded by a beautiful nature reserve. A short walk through the forest leads to viewing platforms where you can gaze into the crystal depths.
What to Expect
- Water temperature is a constant 10°C year-round
- Brave visitors can take a quick dip (it's cold!)
- The surrounding forest offers hiking trails
- A small café serves refreshments nearby
Why the Water is So Blue
Scientists explain that the blue color comes from the extreme depth and purity of the water. Sunlight penetrates deep into the spring, and the water absorbs longer wavelengths of light, reflecting only the blue back to our eyes. But the legends are more romantic.
Practical Tips
Visit early morning or late afternoon to avoid crowds and see the water at its most magical. The spring is accessible year-round, though spring and autumn offer the most pleasant weather for exploring the surrounding area.
