The largest island in Albania, Sazan Island, is located at the entrance of the Bay of Vlorë, separating Italy from Albania. It’s been open to tourists since 2015, and since then, it has become a pretty popular summer destination for curious travelers.

What makes Sazan stand out is the
interesting history it holds, dating back to the Soviet Union and the Cold War. Besides that, Sazan is also the subject of many legends, telling of fierce battles and wars for the gain of this pristine island.

Although it’s a remote island, you can still see traces of life dating back to the 1990s. There were residential buildings, a kindergarten, a hospital, and a school, but they’re now covered and surrounded by greenery, making it impossible to spot from afar.

The History Behind Sazan Island

The history of Sazan Island is pretty long, with the island having been in the possession of numerous rulers over the years, like the Roman Empire, the Byzantine Empire, and then the Ottoman Empire, around 1400. During the Cold War, it was a whole other story, though.

Throughout this period, Albania relied heavily on the
Soviet Union, thus allowing them to build a base for war submarines and chemical weapons right on the island. Up until the communist era, this was an isolated area inhabited only by military members and their families.

However,  when the system changed, the island became
uninhabited but eventually accessible to tourists. More and more locals and tourists alike started to know of this secluded gem, thus increasing Sazan Island tourism.

Where is Sazan Island Located?

Sazan Island is located between the Strait of Otranto and the Bay of Vlorë near South Albania, right where the Adriatic and Ionian Seas meet. It almost looks like a detached part of the Karaburun Peninsula and consists of sandy beaches, capes, and rocky cliffs.

Although you would expect a Mediterranean climate on the island, it’s actually a bit different. Sazan is characterized by a
subtropical climate, having warm winters and hot summers, resembling the climate of Greece.

The island isn’t open to visitors from September until May or June, so it’s best to visit during the summer months when you can get the most out of its amazing nature.

How to Get to Sazan Island?

The only way to get to Sazan Island is by boat.

You can rent one from the
port of Vlorë or even Durrës, but the one in Vlorë provides a shorter and easier route. You can get to the port from any city you’re in, either by bus, car, or taxi, and then check the boat departures to Sazan Island.

There are also numerous companies that provide
